**This collection was on display at ArtNight Marriott Springhill Suites at Bethesda North Marriott in Rockville, MD, September 2014**
I named the collection “Hopes and Dreams” as it represents what I generally feel when I do nature photography. I “dream” of fantastic scenes with beautiful arrangements of color and shapes, and “hope” that these seemingly serendipitous scenes mean something more than I can readily understand. The funny thing is that I actually DO dream about scenes like these images — always a place with no name but with visuals that will not be forgotten.
Through this collection, my goal is to make you, as the viewer, feel the senses that drive my photographic works. To me, it does not matter where these scenes occurred on this Earth. Just that they do (somehow) exist in places I have seen and places yet unseen by anyone. Immerse yourself in wondering why elements can be placed in a manner we find pleasing to our eyes — is it beautiful because it exists as it stands or do our eyes create the beauty before us? Who said natural elements are beautiful, anyway? After all, they’re just a bunch of things that exist: energy, rocks, water, plants, and animals. Is it because so many “things” exist in the Universe that we are awestruck when we see them, apparently arranged with some style? Or is it because those “things” are so prolific and massive that we feel inconsequential in our bodies?
There are too many of these questions. However, I believe each one of us asks ourselves these very questions, if only subconsciously, nearly every day. Seemingly unimportant in the bustle of our societal, economy-driven lives, these questions are actually the most important as they hint to our destiny. Perhaps even questioning the existence of the natural world around us will allow us just a bit more clarity to cope with the frustrations of our short, mortal lives.
I hope that this collection prompts you to wonder the same things I wonder and that the imagery brings you the solace it brings me.
